Op-Ed

My name is Maria, and I joined the Metaverse when I was only 10 years old.  My parents wanted to look for a better life or something, whatever that means. I don't remember much about life outside of the Metaverse but I do remember small things about Earth: the ocean breeze, my old room and school. School. Yes, school. Which brings me to my next point. One distinct thing I remember at school was how much I enjoyed it. I enjoyed all subjects from science to art and math but the subject I love the most was History. I found it interesting to learn about the world around me and I hoped to visit these places one day but I never did. At that point over seventy five percent of the world's population had become part of the Metaverse. My family and I were ostracized; or at least my dad says so. My dad was tired of being an outcast. Plus we didn't have a lot of money at the time. Moving to the Metaverse made my family's life better. I've learned to tolerate the Metaverse over ...

What is STEM?

Today in class we talked about what STEM is. This is a question I have never really thought about in the past because I assumed that STEM was only science, technology engineering and math. In class today, I learned that STEM is involved in almost everything we do or experience in some capacity. STEM is involved in stuff we do including leisure activities like playing games or even relationships.      My group chose the second scenario: Corporation(s) dominate a dystopian future. We incorporated a system that is already in the real world: the Metaverse. We decided to play off of a real STEM system but result in chaos. We proposed that Mark Zuckerberg's goal was to take over the whole world by using the Metaverse.

I wasn't able to print my design but my design was a cactus, The process of creating the cactus was difficult because I had no prior experience to 3D printing. Even though I wasn't able to print, the process of creating the design was very interesting . I had to redesign my print 4 times because I kept messing up. Overall, it's sad that I wasn't able to print.          On a lighter note, I did enjoy this class. I've considered doing engineering but I have no prior experience. This class taught me the basics of coding and I enjoyed being able to trying it. It was cool to see how if you slightly change something in the code it gives your code a whole new meaning: a space between words or a number. I especially enjoyed doing equations in the code. It's made me consider doing more coding in the future. I originally wanted to major in math but I am now considering doing computer science or something similar instead. Overall, I enjoyed this class fo...

My group had the great idea of trying to find a way to shop easier. In other words, our idea was to create a website that allows you to compare the prices of the same products at different stores so you can find the cheapest one. This would stop people from having to go from place to place in order to find a product in their price range. This would also stop them from overpaying for a product.     One of the first things that me and my group members talked about was UI/UX. We knew it was important to have good user interface in order to attract customers to our app and to make the user's overall experience better. My teammates and I formulated different ways to make our app achieve good UI/UX. Micah researched color schemes and found that green is a color that is appealing. We also included pictures of clothes throughout the website which makes the website more appealing. In terms of UX we included customer reviews so the user is able to see how good...

Today I worked on redoing my design on CAD. The first day that I attempted using CAD, I struggled with using the program. I attempted to make a cactus. In my original design my cactus did not look like it was inside the pot. Because I already extruded the cactus, I couldn't figure out how to trim the cactus. I decided to start over today and make my cactus a key chain. I trimmed my cactus before extruding it, so I was able to make it look like it is growing in a pot. All I have to do create a hole in the cactus so I can make it into a keychain. Today we worked with our groups to make a website using the Engineering Design Process. My group came up with the idea of making an app that can help you buy clothes for the cheapest price. We started to make the website design. We decided to include customer reviews and try to have a drop down menu so customers can find their clothes easier. We also decided to allow customer to save their favorite stores so they can shop their preferred st...

Today I used MatLab for the first time. I struggled at first on how code correctly. I only got through 78 percent  of the course overview. I struggled mainly with vectors and matrices because of all the different rules you have to use to code with them. I learned about how to use vectors and how to multiply and vectors.  I also learned how precise you have to be with coding because any small space or something that seems small is the difference of the code running or not. Overall this was a good learning experience for me because it taught me a lot of patience when learning how to code.

Today my partner and I worked on circuitry. It was my first time working with circuits ever as well as my partner Micah's.  This played into the struggle of us trying to figure out how to do the circuitry. We didn't really struggle with the putting the circuits together but more with the coding. We went through lesson after lesson and only one of our designs worked. We tried coding in different ways with no positive result. At the end of the circuit lesson after we put away our supplies we realized we never ran the code and that's why all of our designs failed. I felt so stupid in that moment because we could've progressed much further if we had ran the code instead of just typing it. In the end I learned how to use a resistor and the different LED lights and have a better idea how a circuit board works. In conclusion, I need to make sure to run the code in order to expect results.
